Nyala Breeding Project

Waterfall Lodge started a nyala breeding project in 2011 and has successfully doubled the population in this time up to 2013.

The reason for breeding with nyalas, or any wild animals for that matter, can be compared to a stud farm for horses or cattle.  The animals are genetically monitored to ensure the strongest individuals for breeding and hunting purposes and ultimately, the survival of the species.

Animals are kept in an enclosed natural environment, allowing free movement and natural breeding to occur.

In addition to natural habitat feed, extra balanced feed is given to the animals on a daily basis, especially in winter time, when natural feed is scarce in the African veld.Apart from ensuring the survival of the species in this way, watching these magnificent animals close up while feeding, is an extra bonus at Waterfall Lodge.
